Commentary: Happy Loyalty Day!

To the people of these United States and in the interest of our republic, a few thoughts on loyalty day,

Online forums and news mediums are abuzz with talk of President Trump “proclaiming May 1st as Loyalty Day.”  Quite a few members of “la résistance” are decrying the proclamation as authoritarian, fascist and just another example of President Trump’s efforts to corral the populace of the United States to his will.

Well, President Trump’s failings not withstanding, this is a false flag.

Loyalty Day, or Americanization day as it was called on its first celebration in 1921, was intended to be a counter-celebration to the socialist, communist, and anarchist connected International Workers Day (aka May Day, the day with all the big parades back during Soviet Russia). It was solidified during the 1950s as an official holiday and is meant to be a day during which we recommit our loyalty to the American ideals of freedom, individual liberty, and republican virtue as opposed to the collectivist, central planning of socialism and communism which curtails the inherent natural rights of humanity.

As stated in US law, 36 U.S.C. § 115,

(a) Designation.— May 1 is Loyalty Day.

(b) Purpose.— Loyalty Day is a special day for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom.

(c) Proclamation.— The President is requested to issue a proclamation—

(1) calling on United States Government officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on Loyalty Day; and

(2) inviting the people of the United States to observe Loyalty Day with appropriate ceremonies in schools and other suitable places.

So, Loyalty Day is a day where we all pledge allegiance to the American values which should transcend partisan rhetoric.  It is a day where we can come together in patriotic solidarity, recognizing the heritage of freedom and liberty we have inherited thanks to the sacrifices of those who came before us.

A government that recognizes freedom and liberty is a rare thing in the millennia of human history, a government that does so through constitutional pact even rarer, and one that operates at the express will and pleasure of the people is singular and unique.  For however much conservatives were appalled by the actions of President Obama, and for however much many today feel threatened by President Trump, the glory of America is that we have the opportunity to revisit every political question, make new determinations, choose new paths, turn the powers-that-be on their head without firing a single shot.  The beauty of republicanism and democracy is that we have traded bullets for ballots.  Left or right, red or blue, conservative or liberal, Democrat or Republican, we should all be able to declare loyalty to the principles that have afforded such a rare accomplishment and have maintained for generations the continuance of representative government, freedom and individual liberty, and of the peaceful transfer of power.

So, regardless of the vitriol of 2016, regardless of whether we support President Trump, oppose him, or are just sitting tight amidst some scary and troubling times, hoping and praying for the best,

Happy Loyalty Day!  And may there be many more.
